How to get to and around Baikal
Any traveler who wants to visit the western or southern shores of Baikal should plan to enter the region through the city of Irkutsk. This includes anyone whose ultimate destinations are places like: 1) Pribaikalski National Park, 2) Olkhon Island and the Small Sea, 3) Listvyanka, Port Baikal and the Baikal Shoreline Railroad, 4) Arshan and Tunkinski National Park, and 5) the town of Baikalsk and the nearby Baikalski National Nature Reserve.

For those who want to spend time on the eastern shores of Baikal the best port of entry will be the city of Ulan-Ude. This would include people who want to see: 6) Zabaikalski National Park, 7) Chivyrkui Bay, the Ushkanii Islands, and the Holy Nose Peninsula, or 8) the high mountains surrounding the Barguzin Valley.

Finally, you'll want to travel through the town of Severobaikalsk to get to the northern reaches of Baikal, and visit places such as: 9) the hots springs of Khakusy, Goudzhekit and Dzelina, or 10) to hear the singing sand dunes of Turali, or 11) to enjoy a ski vacation around the village of Davan.

Getting here by plane
There are multiple flights from Moscow to two of our regional airports.* To the west of Baikal you can fly into Irkutsk International Airport, which lies 60km away from the lake. To the east you can fly into the Baikal International Airport near Ulan-Ude, which is about 75km from the lake.

From Beijing to Irkutsk there are regular non-stop flights on S7 and other airlines* that will get you to the Baikal region from China via a short 3-hour flight.

From Ulan-Ude and Irkutsk you can fly onwards to the northern municipal airport at Nizhneangarsk, for which there are short 1.5 hour flights that run twice a week. You can also take a 40-minute plane ride between Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude, if you want.

For travelers who want to explore beyond the big cities there are local options that include travel by train, bus, or automobile.

From Moscow to Irkutsk by train will take you a little over 3 days travel in one of the famous trans-Siberian railroad sleeper cars. To travel onwards to Ulan-Ude will add another 8-9 hours to your train trip.*

You can also easily travel by train directly to northern Baikal, to the town of Severobaikalsk. These trains depart from Moscow's Kazan station, and will take you 3 ½ days to get to the lake. Also, if you fly into Ulan-Ude or Irkutsk, there are regular trains up north to Severobaikalsk that will take around 24-32 hours of travel.*

Finally, there are also regular trains from Beijing to Ulan-Ude, and then onwards to Irkutsk. These trans-Mongolian train trips will usually take around 2 days for you to complete.*
